There were once two separate islets here: l'île Notre Dame and l'île aux Vaches (Cow Island), which was a grazing pasture until the 17th century. It was during this era, that the architect Louis Le Vau went about urbanising, transforming the two islets into one island, creating an elegant district. It was named Ile Saint-Louis in 1725. There are classic hotels with forged iron balconies overhanging the narrow streets and alleys, helping to create the special, majestic atmosphere that you'll find here. You'll also discover a number of restaurants with terraces giving view to Notre Dame cathedral, art galleries, and charming hotels. Promenades along the quays of the island provide endless romantic moments at the end of long, summer evenings.
