A palace called the Trocadero was built for Paris' 1878 Exposition and renamed Palais de Chaillot in 1937 for the Art and Technique Exposition. Today this building is home to the Marine Museum as well as the Museum of French Monuments.
The surrounding square is now referred to as the Trocadero Esplanade and gives a perfect view of the Eiffel Tower and the sprawling gardens in between. These days it's dominated by amateur shutterbugs aiming for the family snapshot in front of the Eiffel Tower.
You'll also come across roller-bladers, post-card vendors and sunbathers, all sharing the area set right between the Palais de Chaillot and the Museum of Man. In fact, on hot days, the small water jets provide a refreshing spot for bathing. Several performances also take place including the Handicap International Shoe pyramid, artistic shows and sporting events.
